Woven Tower Dubai

January 2012, design architect: Studio Farris Architects, product designer: Stefan Schöning

Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The Sheikh of Dubai organised a prestigious competition to create a new landmark in this unique city that would stand out for its originality and cultural symbolism.

The building’s outside appearance refers to the date palm which has always been, and continues to be, an important product in Dubai’s everyday life, both as a commodity and as a local material for the palmweaving craft. As such, it refers to the interaction of Dubai’s inhabitants with their environment.

Also, the twining maze of the building’s exterior simultaneously represents the networks of trade and commerce that have, since time immemorial, arrived and departed from Dubai. It has always been a particularly active centre of regional and interregional trade, both in the Gulf region and in the wider context of contacts between the Mediterranean, Africa and India.
